The Buckinghamshire Building Society is looking for an enthusiastic, experienced underwriter to join its busy Mortgages Department. In this challenging and varied role, you will be a key member of the Underwriting Team, which includes DIP decisions, manual underwriting and control checks. You will work closely with the Head of Lending and Head of Underwriting to develop the Underwriting Team so that they are seen as “the best in class”. This is a great opportunity for an ambitious, highly motivated person to join a high performing team.

The main responsibilities of the Senior Underwriter will include:

  • Timely and prudent lending decisions in line with the Society’s risk appetite and authorisation limits
  • Working with the team to meet and exceed SLA levels.
  • Preparing cases for referral to Credit Committee for approval.
  • Production and sign off mortgage offers for lending within mandate once full supporting documentation is in place.
  • Delivering a first class personalised service: Liaising with customers, intermediaries, valuers and solicitors during the processing of their mortgage through to the completion. .
  • Deputising for the Underwriting Manager on ad hoc occasions.
  • Assist with training, coaching and development of staff within the mortgage department (mortgage admin and underwriting).
  • Review existing processes and procedures: make recommendations on how these can be improved.
  • Review and analyse MI with a view to business improvement.
  • Work closely with the Key Account Managers to ensure that the quality of applications meets the Society’s requirements.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A full CeMAP qualification
  • Significant experience of manual underwriting with mandate approval of a minimum £200k
  • Experience of dealing with broker, intermediaries and packagers
  • Experience of coaching or mentoring other staff
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office)
  • The ability to ‘lead by example’
  • The ability to work under pressure with decision making responsibilities
